To Serge or not to Serge :)

Its been so long since my last post and for that I apologise but every time I throw myself into a project life seems to get in the way.

Well Last weekend end my mother came to see me………and she brought me a gift.

She found it on the gumtree website and picked it up on the way down to see me. The only thing it didn’t come with was the correct manual.

I popped into Romford and got some thread (quite reasonable 8 cones for £19 so I got 4 black and 4 white). Rushed home to then spend god knows how many hours (and I honestly do mean hours) trying to thread it correctly and get it to work! I swear I could have pulled my hair out. I have never used one before and had NO idea how it worked but with the wonders of YouTube and Google I got there in the end….I think

Over and Out or Cut and Hem???

Firstly I would like to say I promise I am working on my Meringue skirt :)

However my new toy has arrived:

I will be honest and say as a beginner I am reluctant to purchase an overlocker (and am shocked at the price of them) so I had a look at some alternatives. There are a few 'cheap' portable overlockers but they didn't come to highly recommended but my Mum managed to find this on eBay.

I thought I would give it a go as I have material that is fraying quicker than I can make the skirt!

She was a little tricky to get on the first time and god help me when I loose my threads...very little room underneath when fully raised.

This is the finished result of my practice. Not bad for an attachment costing less than £20. I know they are not perfect but at least I can finish my seams with the knowledge they wont be unravelling beneath me!
I tried a few different tensions to see what was best this is the back view I think (got them a bit mixed up as you do)!

Right back off to finish my skirt :) xx

Fabric Sale :)

I popped into my local fabric shop today (Lili's Fabrics in Laurie Walk, Romford) and they have a sale on. I was quite taken with this fabric:

Reduced from £8.95 to £2.95 per yard how could I resist. Now I just have to work out what to make with it. I was thinking wide leg trousers or perhaps a dress of some sort. All ideas gratefully received. x

My First Machine

Sew Today, Wear Tomorrow..... This is what I thought you could do before I embarked on my dressmaking adventure! Not that easy is it?

This is my first attempt at blogging so please be nice (but I am quite happy to receive any constructive critique).

My mother visited me today....the result?

My first sewing machine! Happy days, I can imagine myself now just piecing together a whole new wardrobe within weeks. Now off to work out exactly what to do with it, I feel hours of research coming on!
